The issue of Salary vs Consultancy is a complicated one and there can not be a strhigat jacket answer. ( that is reason I visited this website). For example, generally, in such cases all consultancy receipts may be from a single client ( read employer). The agreement may bind you to work for him atleast 40-45 hrs / week. The tax officer may take it as salary.There is not much scope of deductible expenses in such cases since you would not be able to justify employees' salaries, office expenses etc. This is more applicable when income is very high, say, Rs. 80 lakhs per annum, the expenses could hardly aggregate to 3/4 lakhs. Then additional expenses are reqd to be incurred on book keeping, tax audit etc. Also pls remember you need to keep account books for next 7 years as per tax laws.While in case of salaries, you may get your salary structured for PF contribution -12%;super annuation fund 15%, gratuity, LTC, expenses reimbursement of car with driver, travel , entertainment etc.
